This book presents tools and algorithms required to compress and uncompress signals such as speech and music. These algorithms are largely used in mobile phones, DVD players, and HDTV sets. The book begins by presenting the standard tools used in compression systems: scalar and vector quantization, predictive quantization, transform quantization, and entropy coding. Later chapters explain how these tools are used in the latest speech and audio coders.
A chapter containing many MATLAB programs, which can be used to simulate the speech and audio coders, is included.
