How to conduct prediction using self organizing map (SOM)?

As far as I know, SOM is usually used for classification. While I also noticed some people use it to conduct prediction and claimed that its performance is better than ANN and multiregression models. I would like to know how to conduction such prediction using SOM?

Hi Jiao, did you ever find out the answer to your question?If yes, can you please share, coz i am also trying to use SOMs to come up with prediction models i can use to fill in the gaps in my river discharge data.

Refer this toolbox for SOM: http://www.cis.hut.fi/projects/somtoolbox/documentation/index.shtml. I have seen few refernces used to fill gaps and prediction using this toolbox.
